Challenging Course At 5 Nations Vertus

This edition at Vertus there were many familiar faces back to the quarry that’s used for the field tournament. The gathering place was filled with people, and that’s just how we like to see field archery!

According to one of the current organizers, Manu Adnet, in the past there have been years where more than 300 archers were present at the tournament and they had to put up 72 targets.

Now each tournament holds 48 targets, which are set out over 2 courses.

The field tournament in Vertus has been at the quarry since 2015, which also hosted the World Championships Field Archery back in 1994. Now, 31 years later, the club still uses these grounds for their tournament.

Before 2015 the tournament was held at Mont Aimé. This is a hill near Vertus. The hill has a beautiful view over all the grape fields that are used by the farmers to make the world famous champagnes.

Iconic targets

A few weeks before the tournament volunteers of the club already started clearing paths and creating routes for the field. A few new targets were put into place behind the parking lot, which turned out well. Next to new targets, there are a few iconic targets: a 20 meter target behind the canteen, shooting downwards from a cliff and a 40-45 meter target up high on the hill.

Incredible weather

Both Saturday and Sunday were great days to shoot a tournament. The weather was all in favor of some happy archers! The full weekend we hit about 25 degrees Celsius.

On Saturday there was no cloud in the sky. On Sunday almost all the groups of archers were in really early. The first group was done shooting around 2 PM!

Unfortunately, this year there were no champagne glasses for the archers when they submitted their scores. Something went wrong with the logistics of ordering the glasses. However, the canteen offered plenty of champagne to make up for it and the archers gladly celebrated an amazing weekend of shooting!
